Maybe you're searching for online backup because you want to keep your files safe. Sometimes people hear that they should backup their files but don't really know what it means. Which files are the most crucial to you? That's what you should back up.

Here are the top 3 most backed up file types

  1. Pictures-Videos
  2. Music
  3. Personal-Sensitive Documents

For the top 3 most backed up files we can safely use a couple of services to take care of this automatically. Considering you have all your files saved to a predictable place like the documents folder or iPhoto, little to no work is required in setting up these services. Don't fret if you like organizing your files separately, however. All you have to do is manually select the files you want. We use MyPC Backup for these common files and find it works pretty well. You can also check out IDrive as an alternative.

Other types of files to back up

8 sugarsynclogo180 1297110139Collaborative or Project files

Files that are edited from multiple computers and are changed consistently. A good exampled of when these files exist would be something like a video project. There are all of your raw video files, sound, and project files (Adobe or Final Cut Pro type files). Working on these type of projects using a cloud syncing services makes it easy to keep all devices up to date.

There are a few cloud syncing services that we like for these situations. SugarSync is one of the easiest syncing utilities out there. Using the software you can select your files and they will be synced across multiple devices. Google Drive gives you FREE UNLIMITED Google document space. If you want to collaborate on a spreadsheet or write a paper with your friend, this works perfect.

Email Backup

Here at Online Backup Search we use Gmail, so all of our emails are stored on their servers. But if you have all of your emails stored locally on you computer it could be helpful to know they are being backed up. MyPC Backup gets all of your files backed up.

Backing up your entire hard drive

This is possible. Though flexibility is not a strength of these type of companies. BackBlaze for instance does a great job of getting all of your files safe, but it takes a long time to backup a lot of data. They have unlimited space, but they lack in-depth features or syncing capabilities. Unlimited is not always unlimited either. Sometimes you will run into bandwidth restrictions if you upload much more than the average user.

Carbonite is another that provides unlimited data backup. Many of the same issues arise with them as well. Unlimited backup is not always your best bet. Consider how much space you really need to backup before going for these option.

What's the easiest solution?

For most people MyPC Backup works great (Windows Only). It's setup and install are very simple so it only takes a few minutes to start getting data backed up.

For syncing, SugarSync has been a favorite for a while. It's easy to manage files across multiple computer and has an app for your iPhone or Android.
